In 1968 four raw, youthful musicians with a passion for the blues decided to form a band. Barry Nicholls, Keith Patterson, Bob Porteous and Pete Morrison got together and decided to name the band after their youthful exuberance and edgy sound. And so.....RAW SPIRIT was born.
Between 1968 and 1973 Raw Spirit toured extensivley, supporting bands such as Free, Pink Floyd, Family and John Hisemans Colosseum to name a few. Now including singer Rod Foggon the band finally called it a day in 1973 with all the guys going their seperate ways.
In 2004 original members Barry, Keith, Bob and Rod decided to re-form the band. They draughted in top blues guitarist Steve Key (Route 66, Chevrolet) and one of the North Easts hottest horn sections, the brothers John (sax) & James (trumpet) Hall (Eat the Peach, Frontline, Before the mast).
Around 2009 singer Rod decided to leave the band and so began the search for a new front man. It didn't take long to recruit singer/harp player Andy Moon (Sitting Ducks, Lipsmackers, Moochers, Paul James Band) into the fold. Andy was a natural fit with his energetic approach and feel for the blues.
The current line up was completed in 2010 when one of the North Easts top groove masters Ian Gourlay (Russell Emerson band, Chugabugs, Ruff and ready) replaced Bob on drums.
Raw Spirit continue to gig extensively throughout the North East.
